Micro optics Q&A

Answers to common questions about SPIO Systems - our mission of easy, scalable volume production of micro optics, our miniaturized free-space optical systems, and our foundation in polymer photonics and spectrometers.

Our Mission

Easy, scalable production of micro optics

QWhat is SPIO Systems’ mission?

Our mission is easy, scalable volume production of micro optics. SPIO Systems designs and manufactures micro optics and polymer photonics - including spectrometers and micro-spectrometers - and makes them simple to produce at scale, so advanced optical sensing can reach far more products.

QWhat does “easy, scalable production of micro optics” mean?

It means turning complex optical assemblies into micro optics that can be replicated in polymer photonics on wafers and moved into volume production without re-tooling. The result is low-cost micro optics and micro-spectrometers manufactured repeatably at high volume.

QWhy does SPIO Systems focus on micro optics and polymer photonics?

Micro optics and polymer photonics let us shrink classical free-space optics into millimeter-scale modules that are robust, affordable, and ready for volume production - opening spectrometers and micro-spectrometers to markets that traditional optics cannot reach.

Our Systems

Classical free-space optics, miniaturized

QWhat kind of optical systems does SPIO Systems build?

We take classical free-space optics and miniaturize them into micro optics chips. The lenses, mirrors, and gratings of an optical bench become compact polymer photonics modules - including full spectrometers and micro-spectrometers.

QHow do you miniaturize classical free-space optics?

Using Stacked Planar Integrated Optics (SPIO): we print micro optics in polymer on glass wafers with nanoimprint lithography, then align and stack the wafers to micrometer precision. This converts a free-space optical setup into a passive micro optics or micro-spectrometer chip built for volume production.

QWhat is a micro-spectrometer?

A micro-spectrometer is a spectrometer realized in micro optics - a full spectral-sensing instrument shrunk onto a polymer photonics chip a few millimeters in size, suitable for volume production and for embedding directly into products.

QHow is a micro-spectrometer different from a traditional spectrometer?

A traditional spectrometer is built from discrete free-space optics in a frame. Our micro-spectrometer integrates the same optical function as micro optics in polymer photonics, making it smaller, more robust, and ready for volume production.

QCan micro optics really be made in volume?

Yes. Our polymer photonics process prints hundreds of micro optics parts per wafer, so spectrometers and micro-spectrometers scale from prototype to volume production cost-effectively.

Our Foundation

Rooted in northern Copenhagen’s optics industry

QWho founded SPIO Systems?

SPIO Systems was founded by specialists from a branch of established optical companies in the northern Copenhagen area - including FOSS and Millpond. Our co-founder Per Ibsen is also the founder of Ibsen Photonics, bringing deep micro optics, polymer photonics, and spectrometer expertise into volume production.

QWhere is SPIO Systems based?

We are based in Farum, just north of Copenhagen, Denmark - a region with a strong heritage in micro optics, polymer photonics, and spectrometer manufacturing.

QWhat experience does the SPIO Systems team bring?

Our founders and engineers come from leading Danish optics companies such as FOSS and Millpond, and our co-founder Per Ibsen founded Ibsen Photonics, with hands-on experience in optical design, spectrometers, polymer photonics replication, and volume production of micro optics.

Products & Volume Production

From spectrometers to volume production

QWhat products does SPIO Systems offer?

Our portfolio includes a NIR spectrometer, a VIS spectrometer, and a spectrometer development kit - all built on micro optics and polymer photonics for volume production.

QDoes SPIO Systems offer volume production?

Yes - volume production is core to what we do. As a turn-key OEM supplier we take micro optics and micro-spectrometers from design and prototyping through to automated volume production. See our services and technology for details.
